The winner of Art Challenge Wales 2015 is Karen O’Shea with her mixed-media piece titled ‘The people and coast of Porthcawl’.
Karen lives near Cardiff and she travels to various parts of the Welsh coastline to take inspiration from the sea. For her Porthcawl piece she took objects found on the beach (apparently the seaweed here is particularly impressive) and built up her work of art to include shells and bits of plastic.
She then laid hand-made coloured paper on top of the found objects to create the piece which we can see at the top of the page.
Karen told the event team that it can normally take up to 4 days for the paper to dry. Hoever, on Saturday 6th June she had to mobilise a whole range of hair driers and other equipment to get her piece dry and finished within the timescales.
Well done Karen. You win the £500 prize and you also get to have your work displayed at the Kooywood Gallery in Cardiff.
